I took my 14-year old daughter for her first ski trip to Andorra in the recent February Half-term. I had skied in Banff, Canada 4 years ago, so I was a bit rusty but surprisingly remembered the basics and got in to the rhythm quite quickly. We chose Andorra simply because we were going with friends who are regular Andorra skiers and had a mix of ages and abilities going that fit with us.
The ski resorts in Andorra offer runs for all levels of skiers, from first timers to experienced skiers. Andorra has a great range of ski resorts and ski schools, so it is perfect for those just starting out in the sport. The ski instructors are experienced and knowledgeable and will help you to improve your skiing skills and build your confidence. Plus, the stunning mountain scenery is a great backdrop for a beginner’s ski trip!
Andorra for family ski
Andorra is an excellent choice for a family ski trip. It offers a wide variety of ski resorts with something to please everyone, from beginner to advanced skiers. The terrain is varied and the snowfall is reliable, making for some great skiing. Andorra is known for its cozy mountain cabins, excellent restaurants, and other activities to enjoy when you’re not on the slopes. With its stunning mountain scenery and friendly hospitality, Andorra is sure to be the perfect spot for your family ski holiday.
Best locations for families
Soldeu is a fantastic location for families, with plenty of activities to keep everyone entertained. From skiing and snowboarding on the slopes to tubing, sledding, and snowshoeing, there’s something for everyone. Not to mention the excellent restaurants and cozy après-ski bars. So why not bring the whole family to Soldeu and make some unforgettable memories?
Arinsal offers breathtaking mountain views, plenty of outdoor activities, and a variety of family-friendly restaurants and attractions. In the winter, you can enjoy skiing and snowboarding on the slopes of Vallnord, or take a leisurely stroll and explore the charming streets of the towns. Arinsal is sure to provide a memorable family holiday.
Best locations for nightlife
Pas de la Casa is a great destination for adult ski holidays. The area also has a wide variety of après ski activities, from cozy mountain restaurants to vibrant nightclubs. With its stunning mountain views and lively atmosphere, La Pas is sure to provide a memorable ski holiday experience for those wanting to take advantage of the après ski as much as the piste.
Soldeu is a great place to experience nightlife with a variety of late bars, pubs and eateries. Some of the best places to check out in Soldeu include the lively bars at the Grandvalira ski resort. So if you’re not looking for the nightclubs, Soldeu could be a great location!
Eating and drinking in Andorra
Andorra generally isn’t too expensive, but the cost can vary depending on where you go. If you’re eating out in restaurants, expect to pay around €15-20+ for a meal. If you’re looking for more budget-friendly options, there are plenty of small cafes and takeaway restaurants which offer meals for around €8-10+, with takeaway snacks even cheaper than this. As for drinks, a beer will cost around €4-5+, and a glass of wine €4-7+. I had a bottle of 2018 Marques Caceras Rioja, which was €19 in a nice mid-range restaurant.
When on the piste, there are picnic areas if you want to take your own food up, or sandwiches and snacks are €5-6 up to €13-18 for a nice burger/ salad meal deal, although we pre-booked the lunch vouchers for the meal deals, this saved a bit of money.
How big is the ski area?
Andorra is the highest and largest area for skiing in the Pyrenees. There are 2 large ski areas, which together have 187 pistes with a total length of 300km, with 1460 snow cannons making it possible to ski all season. In addition, there is also a high-rise cross-country ski area.
Grandvalira is has 200km slopes divided into 110 slopes located at 1710 – 2640 meters altitude. There are 1075 snow cannons, 450 ski instructors in 7 ski schools and 66 state-of-the-art express chairlifts.
Andorra will this year host the finals of the Alpine Skiing World Cup in March 2023 and is in the running to host the 2029 World Ski Championships, so the standards are going to be adequate for most skiers.
FAQs
Is there guaranteed snow?
Andorra’s ski season typically runs from December to April and is generally very reliable, coupled with the plethora of snow cannons available.
What equipment and clothing do I need?
You can hire all equipment in-resort, which can be pre-booked to guarantee availability, including skis/ boards, boots, poles and Helmets.
Is it cold and what clothing will I need?
Although it is cold, and up on the slopes it can be well below zero Celsius, you will often see people stripping down to base layers as you get so hot moving around. Layers are the best advice, thermal base layers, extra thin layers, Salopettes (ski trousers) and a proper ski jacket are the best advice. You can pick these up fairly cheaply in the sales and it always worth asking to borrow from friends the first time, as most people use their gear just once a year. Some sports style sunglasses and/ or ski goggles are a must, as the sun can be very bright and bounces off the brilliant white snow.
What tuition is available?
You can join group lessons for different ages and abilities, or arrange private tuition. A 5-day ski school for beginners should build confidence and ability to enjoy your 6th day on the slopes with solo, or with your friends and family.
What ages is ski suitable for?
The younger tend to learn to ski very quickly, as they have less fear and are learning lots of new things in their life anyway. That said, a 70-year old lady was learning to ski for the first time in my daughters’ group, so you are never too old either!
Would you recommend it?
My daughter absolutely loved every minute of the experience, both skiing and the après ski! I would highly recommend Andorra for this and all the reasons above. She is already asking if we can go again next year!!
Feel free to reach out with any questions and we will do our best to help you plan your ski adventure.
